Couples counseling is the core of my practice. From differences of opinion or daily habits, to communication problems, financial disputes, parenting differences, addiction or infidelity - all manner of relationship challenges - marital relationships can at times be tested and pushed to the brink. Sometimes the addition of children creates marital stress which often goes under the radar and is frequently reported as the point oat which "everything changed."
Our work together helps you better understanding how reactions like criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling and contempt erode connection. We then look at where they come from, and how to use them as a signal to connect rather than detach. We will explore strategies for improved communication, recognizing sore spots, and navigating them in a more careful, meaningful way. De-escalating conflict and resentments allows us to look more closely at what's driving the ineffective patterns and find safer, more effective and satisfying ways to connect. We will look at the relationship strengths and build on them while aligning goals for the future.
Areas of focus for couples may include:
- Communication – verbal and non-verbal
- Conflict and intense fighting
- Emotional distance
- Parenting styles
- Family dynamics and interactions
- Family histories and patterns
- Common and uncommon ground
